Vocabulary!
Popular Sovereignty- People choose how their government works; the power is within the people
Federalism- A type of government that splits the power of government branches
Separation of Powers- Separating the branches of government such as- legislative, executive and judicial powers
Checks and Balances- Designed that one branch of our government could not be more powerful than one another- they have to be equal
Judicial Review- Lets the judicial branch decide if a law is constitutional or unconstitutional
Limited Government- The government doesn’t have all the power- the powers are limited
Bill of Attainder- Congress declaring you guilty of a crime without a trial- not allowed in the Constitution
Elastic Clause- Congress has the power to create any law that they think is “necessary and proper”
Supremacy Clause- The U.S. Constitution is what guides the country (Supreme Law)
Writ of Habeas Corpus- When you are being charged with a crime, the Government has to tell you why they are charging you with that crime
Ex Post Factor- You cannot be charged with a crime after the law has been written
Due Process- No legal rights can be taken from any citizen
Expressed Powers- Powers that ARE specifically wrote into the constitution to the President, Congress, or the Supreme court
Implied Powers- Powers that are NOT specifically written into the constitution to the President, Congress, and the Supreme court
Full Faith and Credit- A written agreement that one person owes/will do something for another person- like an IOU
Extradition- Moving a criminal from one country to the next
Republic- When we have representatives make choices for us instead of the people making the decisions
